Who are you and where are you from?
“My name is Clay Davis and I’m the owner of Davis Custom Contractors Inc., DCC Cabinetry, and Yellowfin Plumbing and Gas. I’m from Land O Lakes, Florida.”
What do you do for a living?
“At Davis Custom Contractors, we build custom homes and do high end renovation additions.”
How did you get started?
“I started building docks and seawalls part-time and working for a custom home builder part-time as a laborer from age 16. At age 18, I went into industrial construction, working in power plants and phosphate mines, mainly doing civil work but bounced into mechanical a little bit as well. I started there as a laborer also and made it to project manager in a year.”
“I got my General Contractor License when I was 24 and started Davis Custom Contractors Inc, and I’ve been hustling at it for 10 years now. I’ve learned mainly by trial and error, only going to a few people with specific questions. For me, the way I learn is through pain or losing money, other than that the lessons don’t stick.”
What’s your favorite part of what you do?
“What I love about what I do is the constant challenges and that every day is different.”
How does your trailer help you get work done?
“The MAXX-D DDX Dump Trailer is perfect on our renovation and additions because we are not able to drop a roll-off bin at many jobsites due to existing driveways and landscaping. The DDX allows me to let my demo guys work all day without me making multiple runs to the dump to empty.
The trailer is a beast! Recently my site guys, against their instructions, filled it with 23 yards of dirt! The trailer handled it just fine. I had to go 25 minutes up the road in rush hour traffic to empty it. We will be adding an LHX 40k GN Flatbed and another DDX Dump to the fleet here soon.”
