NATE MCLEOD WITH MCLEOD HAULING SERVICES!
Do you have a side-hustle? Are you working a day job where you would have an opportunity to branch off and start a related side-hustle? Working for a home-remodel and construction company gave Nate the idea of branching off of what he was already doing and running his own thing after hours and on weekends: A hauling service and dump trailer rental business that complemented his day job. Check out his story!
WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
“I’m Nate McLeod, and I live in Arlington, WA and operate McLeod Hauling Services LLC.”
Although MAXX-D trailers are all built in Texas, nearly 20% of trailers we built in 2017 were sold in the Northwest.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?
“I work for a home remodel and construction company during the week and I run McLeod Hauling Services as a second job on the side, before and after my construction job during the week, and on the weekends as needed.”
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
“I bought a 1-ton diesel truck a few years ago and used it a lot at work to haul materials and move the company’s trailers around, and one day I was brainstorming ideas for side hustles and I figured I could do something involving the truck since it was very capable, and I found a few options. I decided to buy a dump trailer with the intention of renting it out as a dumpster and seeing if it would pay for itself.
I did research on trailer manufacturers and called around to different dealer lots and found one that had a 4′ side 14k MAXX-D dump trailer and got started. I did a lot of research on my own and read a lot of other people’s stories online across the country doing similar side jobs. After about 6 months I bought another MAXX-D dump trailer, and just this last month bought a 3rd MAXX-D.”
Nate’s backup rig: Chevy with a supercharged 454 big block.
“I primarily am renting out to roofing companies, general construction, and remodelers like me, as well as repeat homeowners that have seen my trailers on the highway and called the number on them.
Business is solid and steady and hopefully, someday I’ll be able to make the jump and do it full time when it makes financial sense and I don’t need to work a regular job!”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WHAT YOU DO?
“My favorite part is the freedom of working for myself. I have a day job and someone to answer to there, but when I’m operating my side business I’m my own boss. I can plan my time the way I want to and make my own decisions on how to operate.

HOW DOES YOUR MAXX-D DUMP TRAILER RENTAL HELP YOU GET WORK DONE?
“The trailers really do most of the work for me. I simply drive them around, drop them off, and pick them up when they’re loaded with whatever needs to be disposed of. Then the dump bed dumps it all off at the transfer station.
One of the reasons I went with the MAXX-D and purchased two more was the overall appearance and build quality. They are simply good-looking trailers and they look impressive. The paint on all three look great and I try to keep up on washing them just like I do my truck.
I get a lot of feedback from clients and the homeowners who have them parked in their driveways that they are about as attractive as a dumpster can get and they especially love the bright blue one. I think that keeping my equipment clean and in good shape shows my customers and their homeowners that I’m a reliable and professional company and I think that is what helps me get return clients.”
“I bought all 3 from Denny at Trailer Boss in Olympia Washington. I bought the first one from him when I initially called looking for my first one and the process was so smooth and stress-free that I called him 6 months later to help me order a custom build. He was able to get me in a slot they had upcoming and I had my new DTX dump trailer rental with a bunch of options built and delivered in 6 weeks.
With the third one that I purchased a few weeks ago, I needed another one ASAP so unfortunately I was not able to custom order one. Instead, I called Denny and he had a 4ft sides DJX that was identical to my first DJX but gray instead of black. I already had my finances in order so he had it ready to go the next day. Every time I’m at the dump or on a jobsite and people ask me about the trailers I tell them about Denny at Trailer Boss.”
