WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

My name is Jeff Hammel and I live in Gig Harbor, Washington!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

My family-run business, The Perfect Lawn LLC, specializes in producing the most beautiful lawns - period! We are unique in our bespoke approach in not having a blanket program for all customers. This is important as every lawn is different; soil parameters, irrigation layout and coverage, age, sun/shade exposure, slope and sometimes even grass type can be different within the same neighborhood. The vast majority of our business is full lawn renovations in taking the existing lawn down to dirt, correcting the soil parameters, correcting irrigation gaps, and ultimately producing the most beautiful lawn. Post renovation we offer an annual turf maintenance program that I believe is the most comprehensive in the business. This program is a combination of carefully curated extremely high-quality products that are not only tailored to the Pacific Northwest but also selected for the time of year for the application. Our customers have made an investment in both me and their lawn, we want to keep it healthy and gorgeous for years to come.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

As embarrassing as it sounds I had a significant interest in grass as a child. My interest really took off once my wife and I purchased our first home. As a gift, she gave me a little yellow book called “Lawn Care For Dummies.” I read this book front to back dozens of times; took what I learned and applied it to my own lawn. I made a ton of mistakes and learned a lot at the same time. Over the years and moving to different parts of the country I continued my passion in endlessly researching soil, turf, fertilizers, and how-to’s through forums, turf studies, conversations with manufacturer reps and so on. Fast forward to 2015 when we moved our family to the Pacific Northwest I remember my neighbor telling me “It is impossible to have a nice lawn here,” I saw this as a challenge and never looked back. I continued to take risks, hone my skills and try new strategies on my lawn; it didn’t take long for people to take notice. Fast forward several years I did a full renovation on my in-law's brand new home where the builder installed the lawn and it was poorly done. Once completed their lawn was clearly the nicest in the neighborhood. Shortly thereafter I received a call from one of their neighbors asking if I would do the same thing for them. I was honored and of course, I said yes but quite honestly had no clue what to charge them; let’s just say they got one heck of a deal. I realized I was offering a very niche product and skill and It was at this point the business idea was created in specializing in renovations but also to continue to maintain the health of the turf there on out for all renovated lawns. I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish in a short 3 years. We treat each lawn as if were ours and we treat each customer like they are a family member.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

I love seeing the look on our customer's faces and the joy they get from having a beautiful lawn. I had a customer once tell me “I am not sure how you came into my life but you have been able to give me something I have wanted all my life…A beautiful lawn."

HOW DOES YOUR MAXX-D TRAILER HELP YOU GET WORK DONE?

My trailer allows me to be to get our work done and has never failed me. This trailer does it all for me. It gets our equipment and supplies to and from the site, hauls away all the old dead material, and brings in soil and drain rock when needed. I did a ton of research on dump trailers and ultimately ended up with a D7X 10k dump trailer. I was also very particular about the color of the trailer as I did not want a black trailer like everyone else. You wouldn’t believe how many customers and just random people complimenting on how nice the trailer looks. BTW, I do hand wash my trailer so it always looks nice – the inside is beat up but the outside looks like new! I do have one regret about the trailer…I should have bought a bigger trailer. Some day, I will add a bigger trailer to our fleet!
