Rolling Operations

This Blue Collar Hauler needed a dump trailer for his own project so he decided to just buy one and then rent it out when he wasn't using it. When this worked well he bought more bins, equipment, and more and now he's in business so to speak.

Let's get on to Clayton's story!

WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Clayton Roll, I am the owner of Rolling Operations. I currently live in my hometown of Quincy, IL.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

I consider myself a full-time "side hustler." Someone less of a redneck may call me an entrepreneur. Although my primary source of income is from my dumpster business, I also rent out shipping containers for storage, manage and own several apartment buildings, and rent out several pieces of excavation equipment. If I own it, I'm always interested in renting it to someone. I have found that this method allows me to overlap service offerings because my company will utilize the rental equipment for large junk removal projects, light demolition, or even land-clearing jobs.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

I started by accident in a way. I have always been interested in investment opportunities. I started my dumpster business after doing a house hack. This means I moved into a duplex at a very low interest rate and rented out the other unit. But the property needed some major renovations. I went to my local trailer dealer and came across a MAXXD roll-off trailer. I bought my first trailer and bin with a 0% interest credit card because I didn't have the available cash. It was also the first trailer I had ever pulled behind a truck. Looking back, I can see why everyone I knew thought I was crazy, but I didn't care; I had a vision.

I told myself it would be perfect because I was also looking at flipping another property simultaneously. So I planned to have a bin at each property, and then when I was finished, I would occasionally rent out the bins, and here we are today.

It was the best decision I ever made. At about this time, I was also working from home for a company out of state. It was the highest-paid job I ever had at the time, BUT I was easily glued to a computer for about 10–12 hours a day. And I mean GLUED. I had to literally run through my house to grab a snack, and sometimes I took my computer to the bathroom with me. It was a time in my life when I learned the true meaning of "money isn't everything."

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

I love to work with my customers more than anything else. I enjoy building relationships and providing solutions to my customers' problems. Problem-solving is a major part of my job. I don't want to do extra work if it's not necessary, so I love finding the most efficient process. I also love receiving calls from people who were referred by someone else because we provided them with a pleasant experience. I love building a brand as well. I am building a company that hopefully lasts a while; it is something I can be proud of. So it means a lot to me when someone says, "I saw your trucks so much last week" or "I have been seeing your dumpsters everywhere lately." It tells me that all the hard work is paying off.

HOW DOES YOUR MAXX-D TRAILER HELP YOU GET WORK DONE?

My MAXX-D Trailers are the backbone of my operation. Without them, there would be no Rolling Operations. I have built my business around my MAXX-D Trailers and can confidently say that I have disrupted my local market because of them.

Sancrest Trailer Sales

WHICH MAXX-D DEALER DID YOU BUY FROM?

I bought my trailers from Sancrest in Billings, MO. This is near where I was living at the time. Great group of guys. The owner, Phil, has a pretty fantastic story from the first trailer I bought from him.

I showed up with an old Ford F-250, bought the trailer, and hooked it up to the gooseneck. While doing that, Phil peeked his head into the truck and didn't see a brake controller. Besides him taking a moment to educate me on why I needed one and what a brake controller even was, he stayed after hours and installed one for me. He didn't charge me for the controller or for installing it.

I caught up with him years later at a dumpster event, and we laughed about it. He said he would never forget that day and never would have expected my business to be what it is today. We also talked about how it is even crazier that I started a YouTube channel that other guys will refer to when starting their own dumpster business or troubleshooting their trailers. And I don't disagree; looking back, I probably looked pretty silly. But he's always been a phone call away and a great resource for me. We still stay in touch about various things to this day.

DIVERSIFIED AND GROWING

Clayton, it's cool to see someone utilizing multiple income streams that all relate to one another. The way you started by buying something you needed, then renting it out when you weren't using it seems to have multiplied into so many areas of your business! We are excited to catch up with you again soon and follow up with an awesome use case video to share your story!

The trailer Clayton uses is the MAXX-D ROX Roll-Off Dump Trailer with 10 bins with 6' and 4' sides.
